John Smith

Provincial Grand Almoner

John was born in Shepton Mallet and educated at Wells Cathedral School. He was employed by Wainwrights Quarries whom he served for forty nine years attaining the position of sales manager.

He is married to Joy and they have two sons, Paul who is a laboratory assistant in the quarrying industry, and Ian who is married to Zoe and is a Business Analyst with the Clarks shoe company. Joy and John have one grandson, Reegan.

Initiated into the Lodge of Love and Honour No 285 at Shepton Mallet in 1986, he progressed to Worshipful Master in 1998. He was appointed Past Provincial Junior Grand Deacon in 2004 and promoted to Past Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works in 2012.

He was exalted into the Royal Cyrus Chapter No 285 at Shepton Mallet in 1988, having been proposed by a former Deputy Grand Superintendent, Idris Evans. He became MEZ in 2003.

In the Provincial Grand Chapter of Somerset he was appointed Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in 2006, and promoted to Provincial Grand Almoner in 2009.

In the Supreme Grand Chapter of England he was appointed Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in 2014.

He is a joining Companion of Somerset First Principals Chapter No 3746, and the Calderley Chapter of Union No 906 where he currently holds the office of Almoner.
