Douglas John Bennett

Grand Superintendent, in and over, the Province of Somerset

John was born in Clevedon and educated locally. He started work as an apprentice with Maple & Co Ltd in Bristol in 1959 and from there worked in Kidderminster in the Carpet Trade in which trade he spent the rest of his working life. He is married to Jenny, who has always supported John in his Freemasonry, they have two sons, Andrew, who runs his own Kitchen Fitting Company, and Craig, who is married to Lois, and is an Auctioneer with a local company. Jenny & John have two grandchildren, Max & Cara.

Initiated into Coleridge Lodge No 1750 at Clevedon in 1965 having been proposed by his Father in Law, he was installed as WM in 1975. John was also WM of Somerset Master’s Lodge in 1998. He was Provincial Senior Grand Warden of Somerset in 1988 and holds the rank of Past Grand Sword Bearer in The United Grand Lodge of England.

John was exalted into Wrington Vale Chapter No 119 at Yatton, again proposed by his Father?in?Law; he later joined Adair Chapter No 1750 in Clevedon and was MEZ of this Chapter in 1980 and again in 2013. He is a joining Companion of Somerset First Principals Chapter No 3746 and was MEZ in 2009. In 2011 he was the Founding MEZ of Calderley Chapter of Union No 906.

In Provincial Grand Chapter of Somerset, John was appointed as Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in and promoted to Provincial Grand Scribe E in 1994. In 2005 he was appointed as 3rd Provincial Grand Principal and in 2006 & 2007 he was 2nd Provincial Grand Principal. In Supreme Grand Chapter of England he was appointed as Past Grand Standard Bearer in 1995 and promoted to Past Assistant Grand Sojourner in 2004. In 2008 he was installed as Grand Superintendent, in and over, the Province of Somerset by E Comp George Francis, 2nd Grand Principal at The Webbington Hotel & Spa.
