Annual Provincial Convocation Part 2 – at Taunton Deane Chapter

As a result of the 3rd Provincial Grand Principal of Cornwall being taken ill at the Annual Convocation at The Webbington Hotel & Spa on Thursday 19th May 2016, causing a delay of about one hour in the proceedings, it was decided to defer the installation of E Comp Barry Woodside as Deputy Grand Superintendent, the installation of E Comp Maldwyn Davies as 2nd Provincial Grand Principal and E Comp Clive Lambert as 3rd Provincial Grand Principal.

The decision as to where and when these installations would take place was not a difficult one as the obvious choice was Taunton Deane Chapter’s Installation Convocation to be held eight days later on Friday 27th May 2016 at Taunton Masonic Hall. There were many telephone conversations and Emails over the course of the next few days but arrangements were finally made between Taunton Deane Chapter and the Somerset Provincial Executive. Whilst it was felt that this would be a somewhat low key event due to the very short notice, it transpired to be just the opposite.

Requests were made from many Companions asking if they could attend and it was a particular pleasure to receive a request from the Royal Arch Province of Dorset asking if their Grand Superintendent and 2nd Provincial Grand Principal could attend. Many of the newly appointed Officers also wished to attend and an invitation was issued to the Provincial Grand Master, E Comp Stuart Hadler. The Royal Arch Province of Somerset being delighted that his busy schedule had a space and he was able to accept. It was also a great pleasure for the Province that the Past Provincial Grand Master E Comp David Jenkins was also able to attend.

Accordingly on a very sunny Friday, with the motorway particularly busy with Bank Holiday traffic, we all made our way to Taunton. Many arrived early but many were also late due to the amount of holidaymakers’ traffic. The Chapter was however opened on time at 5pm, with all of the Provincial Officers present, with the exception of The Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp Bob Moore and his escort. Shortly after there was a knock on the door and the Janitor announced the presence of The Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies, E Comp John Sillett, who entered the Chapter and announced that The Deputy Grand Superintendent was without and requested admittance. E Comp Bob Moore was admitted to the Chapter and was welcomed and proffered the Sceptre by the 1st Principal E Comp Sydney French. The Deputy Grand Superintendent thanked the Chapter for the warmth of its welcome and returned the Sceptre to the 1st Principal, before taking his seat.
